WHAT IS GREEN DOT
Green Dot is an active bystander programme that teaches individuals to recognize "red dots" (warning signs of unwanted behaviours) and intervene with "green dots" (positive actions) to prevent attitudes and behaviours which can lead to sexual misconduct, domestic abuse, harassment and stalking, The goal is to foster a community culture where everyone takes responsibility for creating a safer environment by challenging attitudes that tolerate violence and promote safety for all.
What are Red Dots and Green Dots?
- Red Dots:
These are warning signs or behaviours that indicate a situation could lead to sexual violence or other forms of power-based unwanted behaviour.
- Green Dots:
These are any intervention, choice, behaviour, attitude, or statement that demonstrates intolerance for violence and creates safety for others. Examples include:
- Direct: Addressing the harmful behaviour directly.
- Distract: Interrupting the situation.
- Delegate: Asking for help from others.
How does the programme work?
- Community-Driven Strategy:
Green Dot is a community-driven approach to violence prevention.
- Education:
Participants learn to identify red dots and are equipped with green dot strategies to intervene safely.
- Cultural Change:
The program aims to change institutional cultures to create a norm where violence is not tolerated.
- Increased Awareness:
It raises awareness about sexual misconduct, gender-based violence, and domestic abuse.
Who can participate?
- Students and Staff:
The program is implemented in educational institutions to train staff and students to become active bystanders.
- Everyone:
The initiative engages both males and females as potential bystanders to prevent various forms of violence.
What is the goal?
- Reduce Violence:
By increasing bystander involvement and promoting positive norms, the program seeks to decrease the incidence of sexual violence and other forms of power-based personal violence.
- Empower Individuals:
It provides people with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to intervene and make a difference in their community
